Vintyri™ Enhancements

for Fractal Mapper™ 9

Fractal Mapper 8 users:  The Vintyri add-ons for Fractal Mapper 9 will not work with Fractal Mapper 8.  You can download the FM8 versions here:  https://www.vintyri.org/vintyri/fm_addons.htm

The Vintyri Project™ offers Fractal Mapper 9 users a free, extensive tutorial for raster mapping with FM9 and three free collections with more than 27,000 new mapping symbols and fill patterns.  Some of the products are creations of the Vintyri Project; others are creations of fellow RPG cartographers.  All these products are freeware.  They cost nothing and are licensed for personal and commercial use.  The license models vary from one product to another.

You can scan this page and see what's available, one item at a time, or use one of these links to go directly to the information and download links for a certain product:

·       Tutorial:  Raster Mapping with Fractal Mapper 9, including sample files.

·       Bogie's Mapping Objects, a collection of fantastically high-quality symbols and fill patterns from one of the best and most respected cartographers in the internet.  Also included is Bogie's Redthorn Tavern collection, considered by many to be he definitive set of symbols for mapping inn and tavern floorplans.  This is not a Vintyri product; it is distributed under license.

·       CSUAC and Dundjinni Archives, a huge collection of more than 26,000 fantasy RPG symbols and fill patterns created by users of the Dundjinni cartographic program (no longer available) and posted in the Dundjinni Forum (no longer existent).  The compilations are by Cecil Solomon and Daniel Pryor.  This is not a Vintyri product; it is distributed under license.

·       Vintyri Cartographic Collection 3.0.  A sizeable collection of symbols and fill patterns with special but not exclusive emphasis upon mapping cities, villages, interiors and dungeons.  It also includes large libraries of symbols and fill patterns for winter scenes and for ruins.  This is a Vintyri Project product.

Raster Mapping with Fractal Mapper 9

This PDF tutorial takes you step-by-step through the various methods of raster mapping to produce maps like the one on the cover of the book.  It can be used as a learn-while-doing tutorial with instructions for each step taken in producing the sample maps.  The download package also includes finished map files of all the samples in the book.  Diverse themes also are explored:  How does one make symbols and fill patterns for FM9?  When the shape of the graphical objects is irregular, how does one make the outer white areas transparent?  And much more.

Prerequisite:  To do the learn-by-doing exercises in the tutorial, one must download the three free add-ons below.  After the installation, one will have more than 27,000 new symbols and fill patterns … and one will determine after a while that this still isn't enough.  One day, that particular symbol that you need won't be among the 27,000+ objects that you've installed.  The tutorial tells you how to do a needle-in-the-haystack search for what you need, and, if you still haven't found it, where and how to search for it.  You also may need graphical mapping objects that fit a special theme, one that isn't covered at all in the collections below.  The tutorial tells you how to find them, regardless of whether they're free or commercial products that you can buy.

Bogie's Mapping Objects 3.0

This collection was created by Dan Roy, a.k.a. Bogie.  For years he was one of the top creators of symbols and fill patterns in the now discontinued Dundjinni Forums.  In recent years, his work has been available instead through the online Cartographers Guild and Deviant Art.

This download includes Bogie's fill patterns and his standard mapping symbols as well as his Redthorn Tavern collection, considered in most RPG cartographic circles to be the definitive set for making battlemaps of taverns and inns.  The collection is free.  It is licensed for private and commercial use.

The download ZIP file includes the Setup program and an installation guide.  If you installed FM9 in a location other than the default (C:\Program Files\nbos), we strongly urge you to read the installation guide before installing!  If you fail to follow the instructions there, you will install to a wrong location and Fractal Mapper 9 will be unable to find Bogie's symbols and fill patterns.  If you installed FM9 in the default location (C:\Program Files\nbos), simply click  Install  in the setup program and the rest of the installation will run automatically.

CSUAC/Dundjinni Archives 3.0

This is the mega-collection of free cartographer-created symbols and fill patterns for fantasy RPG battlemaps and for modern and outer space cartography.  In the late 1990s and into the first decade of the 2000s, Dundjinni was the leading cartographic program for making fantasy mappers.  A main source in those days for mapping symbols and fill patterns was the Dundjinni Forum.  Over several years Dundjinni users contributed more than 30,000 symbols and fill patterns that were available for free download from the forum. Some of these were offered for private use only, but the majority were offered by their creators for personal and commercial use.  A few Dundjinni Forum members, above all Cecil Solomon and Daniel Pryor, canvassed the creators of the symbols that were available for personal and commercial use.  They were given the right to collate them into collections that they could distribute free for personal and commercial use under licensed conditions.  The first of these collections was made by Cecil Solomon and called the CSUAC (Cecil Solomon's User Art Collection).  Daniel Pryor then continued where Cecil left off with the Dundjinni Archives.

We have discontinued offering a Setup program for this collection.  Its large content of nearly 27,000 files triggers blockage by some anti-virus and malware programs, making it impossible for some cartographers to install it.  For that reason, we offer the collection instead in a huge ZIP file (5,7 GB).  To install, download the ZIP file and unzip it into:

C:\Program Files\nbos\Mapper9

This operation requires Windows administrator rights!

Vintyri Cartographic Collection 3.0

The Vintyri Cartographic Collection is a free set of hundreds of symbols and fill patterns with the main emphasis on buildings and the tools needed to map villages, cities, etc. in typical architecture of the European Middle Ages, which in turn is the basic style of many fantasy RPG campaign settings.  The collection also includes a wide variety of fill patterns for use in creating overland maps.  Version 3.0 adds numerous new symbols and fill patterns in the additional categories of ruins and for winter adventures.  The new material is designed for:

Creating maps of villages, cities and other settlements that have been abandoned or destroyed and are in a state of ruin and collapse.

Creating maps of campaign areas where it recently has snowed.

Creating maps of villages and other settlements that are in a state of ruin and that are under snow.

The symbols of ruins are available with clean roofs, mossy roofs and snow-covered roofs.

The download ZIP file includes the Setup program and an installation guide.  If you installed FM9 in a location other than the default (C:\Program Files\nbos), we strongly urge you to read the installation guide before installing!  If you fail to follow the instructions there, you will install to a wrong location and Fractal Mapper 9 will be unable to find the symbols and fill patterns.  If you installed FM9 in the default location (C:\Program Files\nbos), simply click  Install  in the setup program and the rest of the installation will run automatically.
